PHILLIPS PITCHES RADFORD WIN

Chad Phillips pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10 to lead Radford to a 4-1 victory over Blacksburg in a New River District baseball game Friday at Blacksburg.

Phillips' counterpart, Blacksburg's Walter Smith, was the tough-luck loser. Smith gave up just six hits and struck out seven in seven innings, but he was victimized by poor defense. Neither pitcher allowed an earned run in the game.

In other baseball:

At Narrows, Green Wave pitcher Mason Bragg held Floyd to four hits, allowed one walk and struck out 11 in recording a 2-0 Mountain Empire District victory.

Tony Boggess provided all the offense Narrows would need in the first inning with a two-run single. Narrows is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the district. The Buffaloes are 2-7, 0-1.

\ SOFTBALL: At Hillsville, Mary Crabb hit a three-run homer and Alice Edwards had two hits as Carroll County (1-2) held on for a 6-5 victory over Floyd County (2-3).
