GLENVAR SHAVES SALEM IN SOFTBALL

Glenvar coach Spike Harrison won a game and lost a beard Friday.

After his Highlanders had lathered Salem 10-3 in a battle of softball unbeatens, it was Harrison who was faced with a close shave.

"I told the players if they beat Salem that they could shave my beard," said Harrison, rubbing his bumper crop of whiskers. "I've had the beard since the start of Desert Storm, but it looks like I'm not going to have it much longer."

Glenvar pitcher Bobbie Jo Wright (3-0) certainly put the fix on Salem (5-1), shutting out the Spartans on two hits over the final six innings. The sophomore also had two hits, including a victory-sealing, two-run double in the sixth.

"I was really nervous the first couple of pitches," Wright said. "But after that I sort of settled down and we were able to show them who's boss."

Salem coach Buddy Ward agreed, saying, "Bobbie Jo threw just super. She was the story of this game."

Along with the wildness of Salem pitchers Rachelle Lytton and Debbie Cobb. Glenvar (6-0) collected seven walks and scored five of its runs on wild pitches, including four in a decisive five-run fourth inning that broke a 3-3 tie.

A two-run homer by Amy Moses, Wright's two-run double and a bases-loaded walk supplied the rest of the Glenvar offense.

Glenvar ended a six-game losing streak against Salem. Last season, the Highlanders blew a six-run lead in the last inning against their neighborhood nemesis.

"We're a team that has no trouble against anybody else," Harrison said. "So, yeah, this feels good."

In other softball:

At William Fleming, Cave Spring (4-3) was the beneficiary of 11 errors and eight walks as it pounded the Colonels 20-3 in a game shortened to six innings due to darkness.

At Northside, April Wiltshire hit a three-run triple in the seventh inning as Lord Botetourt whipped Northside 11-2 in a Blue Ridge District game.

\ BASEBALL: At Daleville, Cousins Alan and Timmy Meador each hit a grand slam to fuel Lord Botetourt (2-2) to a 10-9 victory over Northside. Mickey Catron and Quinn Emick had three hits apiece for Northside (1-2-1).

At Maher Field, Josh Carter's sacrifice fly with one in the seventh delivered the game-winning run in William Fleming's 8-7 Roanoke Valley District victory over Patrick Henry (0-8, 0-4). Tim Kepple and Grover Poindexter had three hits each and knocked in three runs for the Colonels (1-8, 1-3).

At Glenvar, Doug Croy went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Highlanders (6-0) past Lexington (3-2).

At Woodstock, pitcher Chad Burchinal delivered four hits and four RBI to lead North Cross to a 15-7 victory over Massanutten Military Academy.

\ SOCCER: At Cave Spring, Justin Pollitt scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out to lift the Knights to a 2-1 overtime victory over North Cross.
