THE LETTIE PATE WHITEHEAD FOUNDATION, an Atlanta-based private charitable organization, has announced a grant of $55,000 to Ferrum College to be used for scholarships for economically disadvantaged female students from nine Southern states.

According to Ferrum Grants Coordinator Linda Dodge, 120 Ferrum students were awarded Whitehead scholarships for the 1990-91 academic year.

Lettie Pate Whitehead, a native of Bedford County, was one of the first women to serve on the board of directors of a major U.S. corporation when she was named to the board of directors of the Coca-Cola Co. in 1934.

\ CAROLYN THOMAS and JAMES BIER, have been awarded a grant for more than $100,000 from the National Science Foundation's Young Scholars Program with which they will establish a summer program at Ferrum College for middle-school students leaning toward a career in science. The two-year grant will allow rising eighth-graders to attend the college during the summer for a three-week program called "Science Adventure in Research and Career Exploration."
