MAN HITS CYCLIST, CHARGED WITH DUI

A man was arrested late Friday night and charged with driving under the influence after hitting a bicycle rider head-on with his pickup truck in Blacksburg, police said.

Mark Menefee Johnston, 22, of Blacksburg, was arrested shortly after the incident, which occurred about 11:45 p.m. near the Fox Ridge apartment complex. He was taken to the Montgomery County Jail in Christiansburg and released on $500 bond.

The bicycle rider, Philip Michael Hull, 22, also of Blacksburg, suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was later transported by helicopter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Saturday.

Blacksburg police said an investigation was continuing and further charges are pending.
