RAIN COOLS ARDOR OF FIRST-DAY TOMS

Saturday's rain, falling cold and steady, was enough to dash the ardor of turkeys and often send opening-day hunters from the wood wet and disappointed.

Many big-game checking stations reported a light business as the wind chill dropped below freezing in the mountain areas.

Some hunters did enjoy success. Troy Bennett of Bedford killed a 20-pound, 5-ounce gobbler in Bedford County. Jack Tyree of Catawba killed an 18 3/4-pound tom in Roanoke County.

The season continues through May 18.
