Boardings fell to 23,992 in March from 29,113 for the same month a year ago. The most recent number was up by 23.5 percent over 19,423 passengers in February, however.

Norfolk and Western Railway said its coal loadings declined 11.2 percent last week compared to the same week a year ago.
Appalachian Power Co. said it sold 263,689,583 kilowatt hours of electrical power in the Roanoke Valley in March, up a marginal 0.3 percent from 262,832,099 kilowatt hours during the same month last year. The figure was off 3.1 percent from February's 271,998,185 kilowatt hours.
The national consumer price index stood at 135 points last month compared to 128.7 points in March 1990. It was up only slightly from 134.8 points in February. The base period of 100 is an average between 1982 and 1984.
Roanoke Valley banks cleared checks worth $148,790,730 against each other last week, down 46.8 percent from the comparable week in 1990 when the checks totaled $280,031,904. Last week's total was down 3.4 percent from $154,069,078 the prior week.
