MACHINE MANUFACTURER LAYS OFF 120 WORKERS

Simmons Rand, a manufacturer of machines used in mining and aircraft industries, has laid off 120 people at its two Southwest Virginia plants in Bristol and Tazewell County.

Fifty-two of the workers were laid off at Bristol and 68 at Cedar Bluff. A soft market for coal and the financial plight of the airline industry caused drops in product purchases, a company spokesman said.
