LIBRARY GRANT TO AID FAMILY LITERACY

The Radford Public Library received a grant from the American Library Association and Bell Atlantic Corp. to promote family literacy in the New River Valley.

The new Family Literacy Project, called "Reading With Children," has been implemented and is a cooperative effort of the Radford Public Library, Literacy Volunteers of America and Head Start.

The valleywide program has included workshops on reading to children, tutor training and a conference on acquainting the public with literacy providers.

The local Telephone Pioneers provided all the supplies used by the workshop participants and brought weekly refreshments. Other agencies such as Adult Basic Education and C&P Telephone also contributed their time and help to improving the region's literacy rate.
