NCR's earnings were at the high end of analysts' expectations and may strengthen the company's resolve to continue to try to fend off American Telephone and Telegraph Co.
Also Monday, preliminary results showed that AT&T received a disappointing 52.6 percent of the votes in its attempt to unseat NCR's board, at a special NCR meeting last month.
On the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, NCR's shares slipped 37.5 cents each, to $96.625. AT&T has said it will pay $100 a share.
NCR said its net income was $46 million, or 70 cents a share, compared with $52 million, or 73 cents a share, for the quarter a year earlier. Many analysts had been expecting the company to earn 61 cents a share.
The company said its first-quarter revenues of $1.36 billion were a record, and an 8 percent increase from the $1.26 billion in revenues posted for the first quarter last year.
