The theme of the competition was any aspect of Appalachian life. First- through third-place winners were chosen in several categories. Writing categories included short fiction and poetry. Art categories included painting in oils, acrylics or watercolors, drawing or print, and photography.
Charles M. Saplak of Radford won first prize in poetry for his entry, "Morning in the Quiet Kitchen." Kathy Davieds of Floyd took second place for "Aged Wood" and Mary Elizabeth Davis Marchand of Radford won third place for her poem, "Blue Ridge Snow."
In short fiction, April Asbury of Pulaski won first place for her story, "Pendulum." Cynthia A. Johnson of Radford won second prize for her story, "The Lost Child," and Troy David Simpkins of Radford won third prize for "Blue Room, Blue King."
In the art competition, Lyndall Mason of Radford won best in show for her work, "The Egg Basket." Sandy Jordan of Shawsville received the people's choice award for "Gray Squirrel."
Karleen Wickham of Shawsville received second prize for her painting, "Genesis." Kazhia Kolb won third place for "Waiting for Spring."
First place in the photography competition went to Robin Davidson of Christiansburg for "Blue Mystic." Tim Dean of Radford won second prize for his photograph, "Winter Wonderland." Pam Friend of Pulaski received third place for her entry.
Karen Jeanette Webb of Hiwassee received first place in the drawing competition for "Christmas Puppy." Karleen Wickham of Shawsville won second place for "Leaf Fall."
