MARLIN'S CONDITION IMPROVES

Sterling Marlin, burned in a fiery crash Sunday at Bristol International Raceway, continued to improve, but his Junior Johnson-owned Maxwell House Ford team made plans to have Charlie Glotzbach as a relief driver for the First Union 400 on Sunday at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway.

Marlin, who remains hospitalized at Bristol Regional Medical Center, is "pretty much counting on going to North Wilkesboro," his wife, Paula said. But Glotzbach tested for him Tuesday at Martinsville Speedway and will be on hand as a "possible relief driver" at North Wilkesboro, according to a team statement.

If Marlin can drive a lap, then have Glotzbach take over, Marlin still will get credit for the Winston Cup points earned in the race.

Doctors said Tuesday that the burns on Marlin's inner thighs, right shoulder, elbow, hands and face were all "severe second-degree burns." His facial swelling "went down dramatically overnight," Dr. Claude Calcote said.
