BULLDOGS BLAST LANCERS 15-0

Sophomore left-hander Steve Howard pitched a one-hitter and Martinsville pounded Laurel Park 15-0 in a Piedmont Distict baseball game stopped after six-innings because of the 10-run "slaughter" rule on Tuesday at Martinsville.

Howard (3-0) struck out four.

Sophomore Franco Martin hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and finished with five RBI for the Bulldogs (9-0 overall, 9-0 in the district), and senior Mark Ivey added a homer in the sixth inning.

Laurel Park in 3-6 and 3-6.

In other baseball:

Scott Phillips (4-0) pitched a five-hitter and struck out 10 as Shawsville (8-1, 2-0) nipped host Galax 2-0 in a Mountain Empire District game.

Galax pitcher Jeff Spells gave up only two first-inning hits but walked seven. Galax is 4-4, 1-1.

At Glenvar, Sean Grinnell singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and picked up the victory in relief as Glenvar (7-0, 1-0) defeated visiting Bath County 5-4 in a Pioneer District game.

Grinnell's game-winning hit brought home Doug Croy, who went 3-for-3, scored three runs and had driven in the tying run.

Keswick Phillips hit a two-run double for Bath County (6-1, 2-1).

Grinnell (4-0), a senior right-hander, gave up one hit and one run, struck out three and walked two in three innings. Starter Jason Anderson pitched six innings, striking out 10 and giving up one hit, three runs, eight walks and one hit batsman.

Wally Saunders had a two-run double for the Raiders, who committed five errors.

Wes Billings' three-run home run ignited a six-run second inning and Devin Floyd pitched a two-hitter as guest Grayson County routed Floyd County 20-0 in a Mountain Empire District game.

Sean Grinnell singled in the winning run with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning and picked up the victory in relief as host Glenvar (7-0, 1-0) defeated previously undefeated Bath County 5-4 in a Pioneer District game.

At Jefferson Forest, Justin Johannes hit a two-run homer as Amherst County put together a four-run seventh inning to beat the Cavaliers 7-4 in a Seminole District game.

Amherst is 6-2 and 6-2; Jefferson Forest is 4-5 and 4-5.

Robbie Sarver pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11 in five innings, and went 3-for-3 with three RBI as Pulaski County crushed William Fleming at 10-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game at Pulaski's Calfee Park shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.

John Akers had two hits and two RBI for Pulaski County (5-3, 2-2).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Dublin, overtime passed without a score and Glenvar and host Pulaski County tied 3-3 in a non-district game.

Rodney Burnett kicked three second-half goals to put Glenvar ahead, but Pulaski County's Scotty McNeil scored on a penalty kick late in regulation play to tie the score at 3-3.

Neal Leahy and Dustin Lyons also scored for Pulaski County (1-2-3). Craig Dobbins assisted on Leahy's goal.

Jay Sandy had a shutout and Mike Sessions scored the only goal as Salem beat visiting Christiansburg 1-0.

Thad Gilmer scored two goals as Cave Spring defeated host Patrick Henry 3-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

\ SOFTBALL: Franklin County pitcher Shelli Bowles struck out 10, walked one and gave up three hits in leading the Eagles to a 4-1 victory over host Lord Botetourt in a non-district game.

\ TRACK: Bruce Berger won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs to lead Laurel Park to victory in a five-way boys' meet in Martinsville.

Laurel Park finished with 86 points, followed by Tunstall with 79, Fieldale-Collinsville with 51 1/2, Chatham with 45 1/2 and Hargrave Military with 36.

Valencia Eggleston and Debbie McDaniel led Laurel Park (83 points) to an easy girls' victory over Chatham (41) and Fieldale-Collinsville (30).

Eggleston won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and the triple jump; McDaniel won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.
