Kinston's parent club in the American League has put a 90-pitch limit on highly regarded pitcher Oscar Munoz and, because of that, he missed a chance to throw a no-hitter against the Bucs on Tuesday night. Instead, Salem got three hits and a run in the ninth inning of a 6-1 Carolina League loss to the Indians.
Munoz, the fifth pick in baseball's amateur draft last summer out of the University of Miami, retired the first 14 Bucs and faced two over the limit over eight innings. But because Munoz had exceeded his pitch limit and was at 105, manager Brian Graham took him out in favor of reliever Scott Neill.
"His future is in Cleveland, not Kinston," Graham said. "We didn't want to risk injury by pushing him further than we already had."
Munoz is 2-0 this season after being 7-0 at Kinston the last half of the 1990 season.
"I wasn't tired; I was really pumped," Munoz said, "but Brian's got a job to do and I've got a job to do, and my job is to win games."
Roman Rodriguez, Austin Manahan and Alberto de los Santos each singled to account for Salem's run off Neill in the ninth.
The series wraps up tonight with Tim McDowell starting for Salem and Curtis Leskanic (1-0, 0.00 ERA) for Kinston.
