REVENUE BONDS OK'D FOR MAGNOX

Town Council on Tuesday night approved the issue of $4 million in revenue bonds by the Pulaski County Industrial Development Authority to help fund the expansion of Magnox Pulaski Inc., which manufactures products for the magnetic media industry.

Magnox had announced earlier this week that it planned to expand its Pulaski facility and add 15 employees in the months ahead.

Magnox President Rick Pollard, from Wilmington, Del., attended the meeting and expressed appreciation for the continued support of the town. "It's been beyond our expectations," he said.

The corporation was originally going to seek $2.5 million but widened the scope of its project.

Mayor Gary Hancock noted that the Magnox expansion coincided with others in Pulaski such as Renfro Corp. and C&P Telephone, as well as the opening of the Memorial Drive shopping center with new Wal-Mart and Food Lion stores. He said it was the most new business activity he could remember.

In other business, council agreed to remove the horseshoes area from its park along Dora Highway, following complaints of nearby residents of indecent language and drinking there.

"It's an embarrassment to us," said Raymond Pack, who complained of not being able to sit outside with visitors to his home because of the language. He said signs banning alcoholic beverages and closing the park at dark are ignored.

Hancock suggested that the horseshoe pits - which seem to be the gathering point for the troublemakers - be closed altogether.

The governing body also approved the rezoning of 6.6 acres along U.S. 11 near its southern intersection with Pleasant Hill Drive from R-2 (residential) to R-R (rural residential) at the request of Rebecca English. She plans to operate a seasonal produce stand.

Council also adopted a resolution honoring George Russell, a town employee who retired after 30 years. He worked at the town's filtration plant.
