100 PROTEST BUSH INVITE TO GRADUATION

About 100 people marched to oppose President Bush's selection as Hampton University's commencement speaker and to protest what they call the school's tight control over campus demonstrations.

With police taking video and still pictures of the protesters, the students marched Tuesday night chanting "Hey, hey, go home, George Bush has got to go" and "Burn down the Bush."

Marcher Evelyn Hampton said she opposes Bush because he vetoed the 1990 civil rights bill. The bill was designed to offset the effect of recent Supreme Court decisions that make it more difficult for women and minorities to win employment discrimination lawsuits. Bush said the bill would have led to hiring quotas that would have made it difficult for employers to defend legitimate hiring practices.

Bush is scheduled to address the historically black university's graduating class May 12.

School administrators, including President William R. Harvey, have issued statements to the student body and faculty supporting Bush. Harvey said Bush has pumped federal money into predominantly black colleges, including Hampton.
