William Handy Messer, age 76, of Route 2, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, April 16, 1991. He was born in Madison County, N.C. on October 17, 1914, a son of the late Henry Albert Messer and Carrie Treadway Messer. He was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, a Navy veteran of World War II and was a retired tool and die maker. He is survived by his wife, Etta Mae Crum Messer; a son, Ronald E. Messer, Lyman, S.C.; a daughter, Sherrill M. Mooneyham, Moneta; two sisters, Jane M. Meadows, Hot Springs, N.C.; Georgia M. Anderson, Waynesville, N.C.; also seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Michael Winters officiating. Burial in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
