The Rev. T. Eugene Carter, the church's Roanoke District superintendent, said the money comes from the Board of Missions and Church Extension. United Methodists support the board in its service ministry to people who are not members of the church. Carter noted that a number of individual parishes also have donated money, time and furnishings to the transitional center.
The center offers temporary lodging to individuals and families becoming re-established in jobs. More than half the house's operating expenses must come from community donations, which match a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Dan Deane, project manager, said the Methodists' donation "will help us a lot."
