During the open house, people are invited to come into the stores to sample food and take copies of recipes home with them, said Charlie Whitescarver, project manager of Radford's Main Street Program.
Featured refreshments include mini blini (a cheesy dessert crepe), Mexican wedding cookies, Russian tea, pineapple sandwiches, assorted salads and Whitescarver's award-winning Thai Won Awn chili.
Similar merchant open houses have been held during the Christmas season, Whitescarver said, and were so successful that a spring session was scheduled.
Besides the open house, the afternoon also will mark the grand reopening of Sew Biz and ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the Council for Community Enrichment.
Sew Biz moved in December to the Central Depot Building on First Street after 10 years on downtown's Norwood Street. The store offers sewing machine sales and service, patterns, fabric and other items needed for home sewing, as well as classes in quilting, smocking and sewing.
The celebration includes a 3 p.m. fashion show featuring Burda Patterns' spring line. Employees will be wearing Victorian-inspired fashions.
Nancy Moore, a former Sew Biz employee and author of "Machine Quilted Coats, Jackets and Vests," will be at the store displaying a number of the garments pictured in her book.
The Council for Community Enrichment (CCE) Center on the second floor of 1115 Norwood St. will officially open at a 2 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. A popcorn theater, featuring Idlewilde, a contemporary, original folk music performing group, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Admission is 50 cents.
The center also will be used for performing-arts events and classes in the arts, sciences and humanities.
A radio-controlled model car race organized by Dad's Day Off hobby shop will be held in the parking lot of First National Bank near Memorial Bridge. Setup, registration and trial runs are 2-4 p.m. The race starts at 4 p.m.
