4 SEEK SCHOOL BOARD SEATS IN MONTGOMERY

A secretary from Lafayette and a Virginia Tech computer programmer are among the announced candidates for three open slots on the Montgomery County School Board.

The terms of School Board Chairman Marty Childress of Shawsville and board members Virginia Kennedy and Richard Zody, both of Blacksburg, expire June 30.

Kennedy, who has served two terms, has asked the Board of Supervisors to reappoint her. But Zody and Childress, finishing their first four-year terms, have asked not to be considered.

Roy Vickers of Blacksburg wants to be a candidate for either Zody's Blacksburg seat or Kennedy's District F seat on the board. He is a systems programmer at Tech's computer center and a 13-year Tech employee.

Vickers, who is active in the Jaycees on the local and state levels, submitted his application to the supervisors Wednesday, on deadline.

Rebecca Raines, a Lafayette native and resident, has asked the supervisors to consider her for the seat being vacated by Childress in District C.

Raines, vice president of the Elliston-Lafayette PTA, has worked for Kroger Co. for more than 15 years and is a secretary in the grocery chain's risk management department.

William Greene Sr. of Christiansburg also is a candidate for the District C seat. Greene has owned and operated a contract coal mining company in West Virginia since 1987. He is active in PTA and was a teacher.

Robert Anderson, a retired engineer from Blacksburg, is a candidate for the Blacksburg seat on the board. Anderson served a term on the board before Zody.

Anderson, who describes himself as a conservative, was the Army Corps of Engineers' resident contracting officer at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant before his retirement in November.
