NATURAL BRIDGE UPENDS GLENVAR

Mike Bradley struck out nine, walked two and gave up seven hits in leading host Natural Bridge to a 9-4 non-district baseball victory over previously unbeaten Glenvar on Wednesday.

Joe Wood of Natural Bridge (2-5) went 2-for-4 with a double, scored twice and had one RBI, and Jason Knick and Joey Carter each singled in two runs.

Glenvar is 7-1.

In other baseball:

Chris Lampkins had two hits and three RBI as Fort Chiswell had its final tune-up before entering Mountain Empire District play, beating visiting Peterstown (WVa.) 6-4. B.W. Hill had two triples for the Pioneers (5-2), who trailed 2-0 after an inning. Eddie Wolf struck out six and walked none to pick up his first victory of the season.

Timmy Meador smashed a pair of home runs, including a two-run shot in a three-run fifth inning and solo homer in a three-run second, as Lord Botetourt (3-2) beat visiting Radford 6-3 in a non-district game. Radford (4-2-1) got home runs from Chad Phillips, a two-run shot in the fourth, and Brody Smith in the sixth.

As a pitcher, Brian Shotwell struck out seven and issued no walks; as a batter, he was 3-for-5 with two RBI as visiting Lexington (4-2 overall, 1-0 district) beat James River 13-6 in a Pioneer District game called after six innings because of the slaughter rule. The Knights fell to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the district.

\ SOFTBALL: In Buena Vista, Stephanie Martin struck out eight and came with one out of pitching a no-hitter as Glenvar humbled Parry McCluer 31-0 in a Pioneer District game. Kim Hall's two-out single in the fifth - and final - inning ended Martin's no-hitter.

At Alleghany, Marcie Hufton pitched a seven-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none, and William Byrd defeated Alleghany 16-4. Hufton also had two singles for the Terriers, who put away the game with a seven-run fourth inning. Katrina Breckenridge hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to lead Alleghany (2-6), which committed 11 errors.

Three Patrick Henry errors led to a six-run fourth inning and Floyd County (3-6) went on to a 9-8 non-district victory over the Patriots. Patrick Henry (0-6) out-hit the Buffaloes (3-6), but were done in by errors.

William Fleming's Tammy Litton had three hits, including two home runs, but it wasn't enough as Salem defeated the visiting Colonels 11-4 in a non-district game. Katherine Minnahan had two hits and two RBI, and Kelly Robinson had a home run for the Spartans (6-1). Litton hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and followed with a two-run shot in the fifth for Fleming (2-4).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: After scoring a goal, Casey Kessler went into the net and had four saves as visting Patrick Henry beat Magna Vista 6-0. The Patriots (5-0-1) got a goal from six different players and outshot the Warriors 49-6.
