Parkinson replaced starter Tim McDowell in the fifth inning and immediately induced the Indians to hit into a double play. Parkinson (1-0) didn't give up a hit and yielded only a sixth-inning walk in earning the victory for Salem (2-3).
With the score 3-3, Bucs third baseman Kevin Young walked to start the sixth inning. After Alberto de los Santos singled, Rich Aude moved Young to third on a fly out. Catcher Keith Osik hit a grounder to third, and, when the Indians failed to turn the double play, Young scored the winning run.
Kinston (4-2) led 1-0 in the third on a two-out double by Tracy Sanders.
But with two outs in the top of the fourth, Salem's Aude and Osik walked. Then Shelton, making his first start of the season, ripped a 2-2 fastball from Kinston starter Ken Leskanic over the right-field wall for a three-run homer and a 3-1 Salem lead.
The Indians tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Kinston had a chance to take the lead when, with one out, Clyde Pough tried to score from third on Miguel Flores' fly out to right. Bucs right fielder William Pennyfeather threw Pough out at the plate for an inning-ending double play.
Steve Buckholz (0-1) will be the starting pitcher for the Bucs tonight as they begin a four-game series in Peninsula.
