WRONG-WAY CAR ON I-81 CRASHES WITH 2 TRUCKS

A car traveling the wrong way on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County triggered a chain reaction that demolished a tractor-trailer and sent two people to the hospital Wednesday night.

State police said an 86-year-old man drove his car through a crossover about 1 1/4 miles north of Exit 37 near Christiansburg and was traveling south in the northbound lane.

The driver tried to turn his car around while several tractor-trailers were bearing down on him.

One tractor-trailer stopped and was struck in the rear by another which had swerved to miss it. The second tractor-trailer then struck the car, careened through median and southbound lane, before knocking down a guard rail and plunging down an 80-foot embankment.

The truck overturned, demolishing its cab and leaving the driver dangling by his seat belt, state police said.

The truck driver, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital by Life-Guard 10 helicopter. He was being treated in the emergency room early today.

The driver of the car, whose name also was not released, was being treated at Radford Community Hospital.
