VINTON ROYALS WIN SOUTHWESTERN DISTRICT

The Vinton Royals girls' basketball team has won the Southwestern District Championship in the 11- and 12-year-old division.

The regular-season Roanoke County Ponytail League champions defeated Bedford 50-11 and Roanoke city 44-10 in the early rounds and Pulaski 35-34 in the championship game.

The Royals advanced to the state tournament last weekend in Franklin County, where they came in third.

Team members are Tamasa Adams, Shelley Blevins, Kristi Dyer, Lindsay Gray, Sheila Hicks, Alicia Hiler, Danielle Jeter, Kimberly Kendrick, Tracy Mitchell, Whitney Musselwhite and Kelli Runyon. Barry Wood, Ed Gray, Danny Kendrick and Charlie Daniels were the coaches.
