McHenry, 58, said he will be in Wooster, Ohio, today for a news conference announcing his hiring.
"I'm obviously excited about the opportunity to go out there as director of athletics and chairman of the phys ed department," McHenry said Thursday. "It's a great program, a fine school. [Retiring athletic director Al Van Wie] has done a super job, so I'll be taking over a well-established program."
Wooster, with an enrollment of 1,800, sponsors 21 sports, 11 for men, and competes in Division III in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The men's basketball team was 25-4 last year and lost in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, and the baseball team has won the NCAC title the past two years.
McHenry, a W&L alumnus, has worked at the Lexington school since 1971 as athletic director and chairman of the physical education department. He was chairman of the Division III football committee for three years ending in 1988 and has worked as a consultant with Old Dominion Athletic Conference commissioner Dan Wooldridge in an attempt to bring the Division III football championship to Roanoke.
McHenry was a member of the NCAA football rules committee when "spearing" - tackling a player helmet-first - was banned, something he once called his "greatest achievement."
During his tenure at W&L, the men's lacrosse team became a Division I national power, advancing to the NCAA tournament eight times between 1972-80. In 1973, '74 and '75, the Generals reached the tournament semifinals. In 1987, the university decided the lacrosse team would compete in Division III.
