George Darius Moore, 27, was dead when found on the floor of a living room in the Smith's Apartments complex in Ararat.
His girlfriend, Shelby Ann Carter, 21, who lived in the same apartment, was listed in very critical condition at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. Thursday night.
Gregory said police found a .38-caliber pistol with three spent casings near Moore's body. Carter was lying several feet away when the couple was found by her father shortly after 7 p.m.
The couple's 2-month-old child was also in the living room.
Gregory said Moore had more than $200 in cash in his pocket when his body was found - an indication that robbery was not a motive.
Gregory refused to speculate on whether the shooting was a result of a domestic problem. "We're looking into the relationship between the two," he said.
Both Moore and Carter were employed at Cross Creek Manufacturing, a textile company in Mount Airy, N.C.
Gregory said family members told police that the couple had been living together for about two years.
