MAN CHARGED IN WRONG-WAY I-81 CRASH

A wrong-way wreck on Interstate 81 Wednesday night has resulted in charges against a Bluefield, W.Va., man.

David C. Gray, 86, was charged Thursday with reckless driving. Another driver, John E. Mills of Adams, Wis., was in very serious condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

State police said Gray was driving south in the northbound lanes and collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.

Gray was in stable condition Thursday at Radford Community Hospital.

A court date was set for June 10 in Montgomery County Circuit Court. According to state police, Gray tried to turn his car around while several tractor-trailers were bearing down on him. He had driven his car through a crossover about 1 1/4 miles north of Exit 37 near Christiansburg.

One tractor-trailer stopped and was hit in the rear by another that swerved to miss it. The second tractor-trailer then struck the car, careened through the median, knocked down a guard rail and plunged down an 80-foot embankment.

The truck overturned, demolishing its cab and leaving the driver dangling by his seat belt, state police said.
