GLENVAR TOPPLES JAMES RIVER

Have an unbeaten high school girls' softball team? Well, you'd better keep it away from Glenvar.

Besmirching an opponent's perfect record for the second time in a week, the Highlanders rolled to an 11-7 Pioneer District victory at James River on Thursday.

The victory kept Glenvar (8-0 overall, 5-0 in the district) atop the Pioneer standings and a dwindling stack of Timesland unbeatens. Only last Friday, the Highlanders dumped neighborhood rival Salem from the list of the unscathed, 10-3.

"We want to be the one that's unbeaten, so we've got to knock the others off," Glenvar sophomore Nikki Hall said. "Everybody wants to knock us off, and they're all pumped up. But it's a pride thing with us.

"Sure, it puts the pressure on us. We're expected to win. The others are not, so they have more to win, so to speak. I think we can handle the pressure, though."

They did so Thursday. Despite playing in a hostile road environment and with their stopper Bobbie Jo Wright suffering from a headache, the Highlanders still had too much for the Knights.

And when the Highlanders did need help, James River (7-1, 4-1) obliged, committing a season-high eight errors. Three fielding miscues by the Knights fueled a four-run Glenvar second inning that proved to be the difference.

"The second inning was the big turnaround," said James River coach John Shotwell, whose club fell behind 7-2 and never recovered. "You just can't give a good club like Glenvar more than three outs. I figure we beat ourselves today."

Wright (4-0), who walked eight batters and gave up a season-high six runs, said the game simply proved the strength of her club.

"Sometimes, you have good days and sometimes you have bad days," the sophomore said. "We had a bad day today and still won."

Hall, Wright, Tammi Beamer and Amy Moses had two hits apiece for Glenvar.

Belinda Smith and Melissa Markham each had two hits for James River.

In other softball:

At Salem, Kim Feazell went 3-for-3 and knocked in three runs, while winning pitcher Debbie Cobb drove home four runs to spark the Spartans (7-1, 1-0) to a 14-3 Roanoke Valley District romp over Northside (1-2, 0-1). Michelle Harrison, Yo Helm and Rachelle Lytton each had two hits for Salem.

\ BASEBALL: At Vinton, Brian Young set a school record with seven RBI and Jerry Anderson had four hits and six RBI as William Byrd thumped Alleghany 18-8 in a Blue Ridge District game. Young had a three-run home run in the first inning and Anderson hit a three-run homer in the third for Byrd (8-0-1). Alleghany is 2-6.

Brian Robertson went the distance for a three-hitter, struck out nine and walked two as Northside (2-2-1, 1-1) handed visiting Salem (6-1, 1-1) its first defeat, 8-2 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Kelly Dampeer was 3-for-4 with a homer, triple and five RBI; Chris Hatcher went 2-for-3 with a homer, double and three RBI; and Scott Manning was 3-for-4 for Northside.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Dublin, J.P. Wilson scored three goals to fuel Patrick Henry (2-2-1) to a 5-2 Roanoke Valley District victory over Pulaski County (1-3-3).

At Daleville, Joey Hoyt scored two goals as undefeated Lord Botetourt (6-0-1, 2-0) held off Northside 3-2 in a Blue Ridge District game.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At North Cross, Liz Wedemeyer and Macye Kinsey scored the only goals as Patrick Henry (6-0-1) took a 2-0 victory over North Cross (3-5).
