PROBE ORDERED OF POLICE IN VA. BEACH

A five-day newspaper series on alleged brutality by Virginia Beach police has prompted City Manager Aubrey V. Watts Jr. to order a detailed investigation of the department.

The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star reported that Watts asked for the probe in a memo he sent Tuesday to Chief Charles R. Wall.

Watts asked for accounts of cases in which people were injured in police custody. He said he would alert the U.S. Justice Department of the incidents described in the series, and he suggested new policies aimed at retraining the department's leadership.

Wall scheduled a news conference for this afternoon to discuss the matter.
