Timothy A. Buzzo, 24, of the 800 block of Washington Avenue, Vinton, was traveling north on Virginia 122 when the truck went out of control shortly after 4:30 p.m.
It crossed a double yellow line on the two-lane highway about three miles north of Moneta, went down a slight embankment and crashed into a tree.
The truck was carrying lumber, which spilled along the road, Trooper M.W. Rorer said.
The fire gutted the cab of the truck, which belonged to George Woolridge, a Vinton man who owns several rigs, Rorer said. Woolridge said the truck had picked up a load of lumber from Blue Ridge Wood Preservers in Moneta and was heading to Martinsburg, W.Va.
