DRIVE-BY SHOTS FIRED NEAR THREE STUDENTS

Shots were fired from a passing truck near three children waiting for a school bus today, police said. None of the children was hurt.

Cpl. D.L. Conley of the Greene County Sheriff's Department said the shots apparently were fired randomly and did not appear to have been aimed at the children.

The gunman, driving a small, white pickup along U.S. 33, fired three shots from a shotgun, Conley said. Some of the pellets struck a camper about 50 feet from the children. No one was in the camper.

Conley said the gunman's pickup was last seen heading east on U.S. 33 in Stanardsville.

He said the driver appeared to be in his 50s and had a full gray beard. The incident was reported about 7:40 a.m.

Drive-by shootings also were reported in Augusta County today. Sheriff Glenn Lloyd said someone shot at three vehicles on U.S. 340 north of Waynesboro between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. No one was hurt.

The latest reports of drive-by shootings come a week after a rash of similar shootings in Albemarle County.
