FUNK BAND ENERGIZES NEW RIVER

The funkmonster powerhouse group, Egypt, has rolled into town this weekend from Washington with an aura that has come to be known as "Emotion in Motion."

The band appeared at Buddy's in Blacksburg Friday with the group Shock Seven and will be at Lucky's in Radford tonight. .

The group combines funk, jazz, metal, ska and reggae. All four members are vocalists and include bassist Andy Waldeck, Joe Lawlor on lead guitars, Michael Sheppard on guitars (and lead vocals) and drummer/percussionist Glenn Walton. It's been said in reviews that Sheppard can do the James Brown scream better than Eddie Murphy.

Egypt, which formed about three years ago, has opened for national acts such as Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, The Neville Brothers and the Tom Tom Club. The band is touring the East Coast's college and club circuit and is working on a deal for its first album.
