GROUNDS NEAR ABINGDON WILL BE SITE OF RODEO

Washington County's first Virginia Championship Rodeo will be sponsored May 3-4 by the Burley Tobacco Festival & Farm Show Inc. at the county fairgrounds a mile west of here on U.S. 11.

Advance tickets are $5 ($2.50 for children ages 6-12) and are available from Meade Realty, Sovran Bank, WBBI/WABN Radio and the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. Tickets at the gate will be $7 and $3.50.

Proceeds will go toward fairground improvements including parking, concessions and buildings.

The event is sanctioned by the American Professional Rodeo Association and Southern Rodeo Association. Events will include bareback bronc-riding, calf-roping, steer-wrestling, team-roping, cowgirls' barrel race, Brahma bull riding, goat tying, and events in which children can ride a sheep or calf.

Lee Harman of WBBI/WABN Radio will attempt to ride Rosebud the Rodeo Steer as an added attraction. Activities start both nights at 7:30 p.m., with a May 5 performance at 2 p.m. if either of the others is rained out. - Southwest bureau
