NATO OFFICIAL TO TALK AT CADET CEREMONY

Adm. Leon A. "Bud" Edney, NATO's supreme allied commander, Atlantic, and commander-in-chief of the U.S. Atlantic Command, will be the speaker for Virginia Tech's cadet commissioning May 3.

More than 50 of the 76 seniors in Tech's corps of cadets will be commissioned into the armed services during a ceremony at the Donaldson Brown Center for Continuing Education at 3 p.m.

Edney, a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., was the 69th commandant of midshipmen there until he assumed his present duties last May.

He received a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University in 1963, was a White House Fellow in 1970 and was special assistant to the U.S. secretary of transportation.

In 1971, he was named executive officer of Attack Squardon 27 and assumed command the following year. His awards and decorations include the Navy Distinguished Service Medal with gold star, the Legion of Merit with two gold stars, and the Distinguished Flying Cross with four gold stars.
