Richard Robertson pitched five innings of two-hit ball for the Bucs before giving way to Dave Byrd, who picked up a loss in his first decision. The game was scoreless through 6 1/2 innings, but then the Pilots came to life with four runs on five hits off Byrd.
Three consecutive run-scoring singles after the bases were loaded and a sacrifice fly produced the four runs. Willie Romay, who was 1-for-17 on the season, started it with the first run-scoring single.
Salem came back with two runs off reliever Doug Tegtmeier, who went one-third of an inning and gave up five hits, two runs and left with the bases loaded and one out. With the bases still loaded, Keith Osik struck out looking for the third out to end Salem's challenge.
Austin Manahan's throwing error led to the Pilots' final run in the eighth.
Paul Perkins picked up his second win for the Pilots (2-5), who had gone 24 consecutive scoreless innings and were averaging less than two runs a game prior to Friday.
