STATE TO OPERATE TAX `REFUND HOTLINE'

The Virginia Department of Taxation has established a new telephone number for checking the status of 1990 state tax refunds.

The "refund hotline" is 804-367-2274. There is a toll for the call, which must be made between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

Callers must have touch-tone phones to enter their Social Security numbers and the amount of the refund requested. The data is required to ensure privacy of tax information.

Virginia tax returns are due May 1, and the department has another 24-hour number that offers prerecorded state tax information. That number is 804-367-2272.

Both numbers are alternatives to the regular taxpayer assistance line, 804-367-8031. The department said that number is difficult to reach this time of year.

Persons with questions about state income taxes can also contact local commissioners of revenue. Those numbers are printed on the back of the tax instruction booklets.
