LYNCHBURG DELEGATE WON'T SEEK RE-ELECTION

Del. Edward Harris, D-Lynchburg, surprised his colleagues by announcing he will not run for re-election in November.

"I will serve out my present term to the best of my ability," Harris said at a Friday news conference. He cited personal reasons and the demands of his business for the decision to step down after four years in the legislature.

"I originally conceived of the [legislative position] taking about half time. It's taking more [time] and will continue to take more," Harris said.

Harris defeated City Councilman Steve Newman, a Republican, by less than 700 votes in the 1989 election. He denied the possibility that another tough campaign against Newman influenced his decision.
