VCU BOARD OKS INCREASE IN TUITION

Virginia Commonwealth University's Board of Visitors Friday passed a budget raising tuition 17.5 percent for state students and 26.5 percent for non-residents.

Undergraduate Virginians who live in university housing will pay $547 more than they did this year; out-of-staters will pay $1,777 more. Room prices went up 6 percent, and meals were raised 5 percent.

President Eugene Trani shelved a plan to eliminate the housekeeping department and contract out janitorial work.

"To lay off 191 of our lowest-paid and predominantly minority workers at a time of such economic uncertainty does not seem to be the right thing to do," Trani said.

The department instead will be phased out as workers leave or retire, delaying much of the savings for about six years.
