POLL: 40% FAVOR NUCLEAR POWER USE

Two out of five Americans believe the country should rely on nuclear power more than other energy sources for increased energy needs in the 1990s, according to a poll released Saturday.

By comparison, 25 percent said oil and 22 percent chose coal in the poll taken for Time magazine and CNN.

However, Time said the poll also found 32 percent strongly oppose building more nuclear plants, compared with 18 percent who strongly favor new construction. Sixty percent in the poll considered building a nuclear plant in their community unacceptable.

The telephone poll of 1,000 adults, taken April 10-11 by Yankelovich Clancy Shulman, has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. - Associated Press
