The two Henry County anglers teamed up to take first place in the 69-boat event, bringing a one-day's catch of 28.30 pounds to the Water Wheel Marina weigh-in. That included the contest's heaviest smallmouth bass, a 4.33-pounder. They won $8,615.
It was the third Lucky 13 Bassmasters-Oak Ridge Toyota-Blue Ridge Mitsubishi tournament the pair has won since 1987.
A lag in the entries trimmed the top prize, which had been advertised at $12,000 or two pickup trucks, according to sponsor Howard Sodikoff, a Lynchburg automobile dealer.
Second were Kenneth Snyder and Michael Surber, who entered 23.26 pounds, good for $4,140.
The best largemouth of the tournament was a 7.38-pounder entered by Danny Towe and Butch Spence.
Bob Taylor and Bob Grosvenor finished third with a 23.13-pound total. They won $2,415.
Fourth was Dale Wilson and Troy Woolwine, 22.66 pounds, $345; fifth, Bruce Rink and Jim Stephenson, 21.73, $345.
The tournament had a $300-per-boat entry fee.
