Few did better than Charles Dailey of Roanoke County, who invited a couple of his flounder fishing friends from Eastern Shore to hunt with him in Floyd County. During a one-hour hunt, Dailey killed a 21-pound, 1-ounce gobbler and his companions scored with 18 pound and 17 1/2-pound birds.
"Now I get some free fishing, I hope," said Dailey.
It took Marvin Catron of Catawba less than five minutes to call in an 18 1/2-pound gobbler after he heard it gobble twice just after daylight in Roanoke County.
Reggie Knighton of Salem confronted a flock of six hens and two gobblers during a Botetourt County hunt, where he killed a 19 3/4-pound tom. When he called, the gobbler broke off from the flock and came within shotgun range.
"The bigger one was lingering behind," he said.
