CARDINAL NSUBUGA, UGANDA ACTIVIST, DIES

Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga, a former head of the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda and an opponent of human rights abuses under Idi Amin's rule, has died, a church official said Sunday. He was 77.

The spokesman said Nsubuga died of blood and bone cancer on Saturday in a hospital in Cologne, Germany, where he was admitted on Dec. 5.

Amin was overthrown in 1979 by Tanzanian troops and Ugandan exiles. Nsubuga retired in April 1990.
