ROANOKE AAU GIRLS WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Roanoke Stars White team came out on top of 21 teams in the AAU basketball state championship for 13-year-old girls by defeating the Cougar Gold team from Pulaski County 64-31 in the championship Sunday at William Byrd High School.

Samantha Ferguson and Aimee Johnson each had 12 points for the winners and Carrie McConnell led the Cougar Gold team with 10.

The Roanoke Stars White, which beat Commonwealth Athletic Club Virginians from Woodbridge 67-50 behind Kim Hairston's 22 points earlier Sunday, will play in the national tournament July 12-20 in Cincinnati. - Staff report
