Lucy Saleeba is still making mouth-watering hero sandwiches at her Southeast Roanoke grocery. After a front-page newspaper story last fall about her popular store, city inspectors checked her out. They ordered her to get a three-compartment sink and new floor covering to meet restaurant standards.
All this when Saleeba, well past retirement age, had the store up for sale.
Friends and newspaper readers offered free labor and equipment. The deadline for store improvements was Dec. 31, but because of foul-ups over sinks and other complications, the city has given her until Jan. 15.
The linoleum's down. The sink's coming. And Saleeba's still in business.
