RAYMOND GUEST, EX-ENVOY, DIES

Raymond R. Guest, a former state senator and ambassador to Ireland, died Tuesday at Mary Washington Hospital after an extended illness.

Guest, father of Del. Raymond "Andy" Guest Jr. of Front Royal, was 84.

A spokeswoman at Guest's legislative office said his father had been in the hospital for several days. The cause of death was not immediately available.

Guest served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1940 to 1946 and earned several combat medals during World War II, according to a spokesman at Guest's horse farm in King George County.

He was ambassador to Ireland from 1965 to 1968. He also was a Democratic state senator for the 24th District from 1947 to 1953.

Guest was a commissioner of the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries Department from 1959 to 1965.

A native of New York City, Guest was a 1931 graduate of Yale University.

Guest is survived by his wife, Princess Caroline Murat, and their two children; three children by a former marriage; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be private. - Associated Press
