`TERMINATOR 2' IS YEAR'S TOP GROSSING FILM
Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg adventure "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" was
the highest grossing film of 1991, with more than $204 million in ticket
sales, according to preliminary figures released last week.
"Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" finished second with a North American
theater gross of $165.5 million, Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. reported.
Third was "The Silence of the Lambs," followed by "City Slickers" and
"Sleeping With the Enemy."
"Terminator 2" is still in theaters, so its receipts will grow slightly
before year's end. "The Addams Family" was the only other movie on the
company's top 10 list to still be in theaters.
In sixth place was "The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear," followed by
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze," "The Addams
Family," "Backdraft" and "Hot Shots!"
Official figures had not been released, but overall movie attendance is
thought to be off about 4 percent from a year ago. Five 1991 releases made
more than $100 million; eight surpassed that milestone a year ago.
The trade newspaper Daily Variety said this year should be the third best
in box-office history.
Despite the success of "Terminator," the film's producer, Carolco Pictures,
is in financial distress. Orion Pictures, the maker of "The Silence of the
Lambs," is in bankruptcy court.
