NEIGHBORS FUND TOPS RECORD

A record $114,807.33 has been contributed to the Good Neighbors Fund to help Roanoke Area Ministries provide services.

This "will extend our daily outreach of emergency financial assistance tremendously," said Julie Hollingsworth, RAM executive director.

It also will provide fuel assistance and medical help for more people, she said, adding that contributors to the fund that started Nov. 24 should be applauded.

"It says to me that people in the Roanoke Valley are being sensitive to the needs around them. We all know someone or of someone who is having difficulties or are in more of a bind than they have been in a long time," Hollingsworth said.

In addition to the Good Neighbors Fund, which is sponsored by the Roanoke Times & World-News, RAM has "gotten money from new people who chose not to give gifts this year," Hollingsworth said.

The previous Good Neighbors Fund raised $105,000, about 41 percent of RAM's total budget. This fund drive was a week shorter, but contributions seemed to be larger.

RAM uses the fund to help with utilities, housing, food, medicine and other emergency needs. Some of the money also is designated for the operation of RAM House, where Roanoke's homeless receive a hot lunch and may spend the day in a warm, safe place.

"The fund will help us provide people with what everyone needs," Hollingsworth said.

She said she feels good about the way recipients are screened. "I feel we have a responsibility to be a good steward of the public's money. I hope the public would applaud the way we are spending it."

Checks should be made payable to Good Neighbors Fund and mailed to Roanoke Times & World-News, P.O. Box 1951, Roanoke 24008.
