They were embroiled in a public controversy for nearly a month.But through it all, David Clayton and Doug Allen have remained friends.
Clayton, a black police sergeant, challenged Allen's promotion to lieutenant in September, charging the Roanoke Police Department was racially biased in its selection. Allen is white.
The city solved the grievance by giving both officers their lieutenant's bars, and now Clayton relieves Allen each night as commander of patrol officers.
"There are some guys in the department that will never let it drop," Allen said. "As far as Dave and I are concerned, our relationship is stronger than it has been for several years."
Allen trained Clayton when Clayton was new on the force.
"I think we mutually feel that the mission of the department is more important that the dispute over the promotion," Clayton said. "Recognizing that, it is important for us to work well together."
