Close only counts, the saying goes, with horseshoes and hand grenades.

It sure doesn't count with Roanoke County's Board of Zoning Appeals.

In August, the zoning appeals board turned down a variance request for a house in Glade Hill Estates that violated setback requirements. The house was 5 1/2 feet too close to the road. The house could not be sold until a variance was approved or the violation was corrected.

The builder moved the house.

Another setback violation was on the zoning appeals board's agenda in November. This time, it was for a house at 8210 Bayberry Court in Southwest Roanoke County. A corner of the garage of the house was six inches too close to the road.

Again, the zoning appeals board refused to grant a variance.

The builder remodeled the garage. The entire house now is behind the setback line, and it has been sold.
