RELIGION BRIEFS

\ SISTER EVELINE MURRAY, a former pastoral coordinator of St. Francis of Assisi Church of Rocky Mount, has been named to a similar position at the Roman Catholic Church of the Transfiguration at Fincastle. Bishop Walter F. Sullivan of Richmond said the nun will begin her work Saturday. Murray will succeed the late Sister Madeline Abdelnour who died in October.

For the past year Murray has been on a study leave at Loyola University in Chicago. She served the Rocky Mount congregation from 1980 to 1990.

A pastoral coordinator performs all duties at a church except officiating at Mass, a privilege the Catholic church still reserves for men. Priests from St. Andrew's Church in Roanoke will continue to perform that function each Saturday at 5:15 p.m. at the temporary meeting place, Fincastle United Methodist Church.

\ A GRANT OF $1,000 has been contributed to Roanoke Area Ministries from the Fuel and Hunger Fund of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond. The money is dispensed by Bishop Walter F. Sullivan from a fund to which Virginia Catholics contribute and is used to augment gifts made in communities throughout the state.

\ SALEM WESLEYAN CHURCH, 424 Chamberlain Lane, will hear Janice Cooper, a missionary nurse in La Gonave, Haiti, at the annual Missions Convention Jan. 11 and 12.

Cooper, a native Virginian who has worked in Haiti since 1984, will present programs at a 6 p.m. Saturday potluck dinner as well as the following day at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. All events are open to the public.

Deadline for religion briefs for Neighbors is Thursday. Material must be delivered to Neighbors Religion Briefs, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke 24010, by noon in order to run in the following Thursday edition.
