THE TIPOFF

HOOF: The Budweiser Stampede Rodeo moo-ves into the Salem Civic Center for four shows tonight through Sunday.

Bulls, calves, horses, cowboys, cowgirls, ropin', wrasslin' and yes, the smells of the Old West will all be prominent parts of the scene.

WOLF: The Bob Brown Puppets will present "Peter and the Wolf," a musical adventure story, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $4 and the number to call is (804) 846-3804.\

STAR: Dawn Upshaw, a leading soprano with the Metropolitan Opera, will sing Tuesday night at 8 at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke.

She will appear with the Kandinsky Trio, the chamber artists in residence from Roanoke College, for a program of music from Beethoven, Turina, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff.

Tickets are $10 and $12, available from the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge and the Mill Mountain Theatre box office in Roanoke.\

PHENOMENA: "Season of Light" and "Arctic Lights" are the planetarium programs at the Science Museum of Western Virginia. It, of course, is in Center in the Square in downtown Roanoke.

Other attractions include Kid's Space, friendly computer programs for the young and, of course, fascinating exhibits. For full information, call 343-7876.\

BUT CAN THEY SPELL?: Rythm Syndicate, plus Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, will perform Tuesday night at 7:30 at the Salem Civic Center. Tickets are $13.50 in advance and $15 on the day of the show. Call 375-3004.\
